’…the Merseyside based four-piece have conjured up a wickedly cathartic cut…’
Following on from their brilliantly claustrophobic track ‘Running Out of Ways’ released earlier that year, ‘your girlfriend’s favourite band’ Thalia’s Grace have returned once more. This time, with ‘Keep Me Warm’, the Merseyside based four-piece have conjured up a wickedly cathartic cut on seeking to strip out the impact of another on your life.
This is a moody, melancholic number, sculpted around a tripping, waltzing rhythm. Soaked in reverb, there’s a haunting, cinematic beauty to it all, as shimmering guitars and steady bass are draped over a subtly complex percussive performance. The vocal performance is beautifully morose, as Laura Sladdin teeters on the verge of self-destruction whilst seeking to reclaim her own tainted memories and experiences; it’s a shockingly vicious affair beneath the tender surface.
The track culminates in a crushing climax as powerfully distorted guitars overwhelm the sonic landscape, and the percussion swells to a thunderous degree of heaviness. It’s a brilliant moment of catharsis that brings the track’s undercurrent of violent desperation to the surface, all the while Sladdin remains a steadfast figure
Track by track, Thalia’s Grace are building a commendable discography that marks them out as being something a little different; comparisons can certainly be made to the likes of The Last Dinner Party and Crawlers, but ‘Keep Me Warm’ cannot be mistaken for a track by anyone other than Thalia’s Grace. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing that name more often.
