’…their strong live prowess has a studio recording to match, with their electrifying debut single, ‘empty ceiling’…’
For most, Merseyside’s music output is perhaps most well know for its Britpop, rock’n’roll, and indie output; even outside of its 60’s heyday, contemporary artists such as Red Rum Club and Jamie Webster continue that tradition. However, peer a little closer, and you’ll find a rich heavy music culture, with the likes of Loathe and rising stars Cut Short transforming the region. The next outfit you need to know is the four-piece rozemary.
Having featured on plenty of live line-ups without even having released a song, there is a real, intense hype surrounding the band on the circuit. Now their strong live prowess has a studio recording to match, with their electrifying debut single, ‘empty ceiling’. Guitars weave surprisingly spacious melodic passages whilst retaining a razor-sharp heaviness; some passages even feel a little grungy in nature, particularly during the soaring choruses.
The percussion crackles with a vicious energy throughout, with the band’s appreciation for hardcore clear; plenty of rhythmic passages here beg you to break out your finest two-step, despite it not being an overtly hardcore track. This energy reaches a brilliant apex with a ferocious breakdown segment in the back half of the track, heralded by a strident bass line. All of this is topped off with a compelling vocal performance from Isabel Lavin, who not only produces some searing screams, but has a gorgeous singing tone that is somewhat surprisingly reminiscent of Dolores O’Riordan.
Are rozemary going to be the next big thing in heavy music? There are no guarantees. However, between ‘empty ceiling’ and their incredible live presence, the band exude the kind of raw potential that makes you believe they certainly could be. Don’t be surprised when your favourite heavy band takes them on tour.
