’…the mark of a band executing a precise vision, and that sense of drive and determination makes it an EP impossible to ignore…’
LOVELETTER blasted their way into the alternative scene back in 2023, with their debut single ‘Slow Death’. Their penchant for making sounds that utterly bludgeon the listener has rewarded the band with plenty of attention, especially surrounding their latest single, ‘Choke’, released earlier this year. Now striking whilst that iron is red hot, the band have released five brand-new tracks on a killer debut EP.
‘A Place That Doesn’t Exist’ is nine minutes of pure adrenaline, pulling together threads of nu-metal, metalcore, and hardcore into a blistering sonic rampage. The breakdowns are bruising, but LOVELETTER extend further beyond being mere breakdown architects, and conjure up substantial slabs of metal that rewards repeated listens.
The title track exists as a simple introduction to the absolute monster of a track ‘Thorn’. An exercise in sheer brutality, the track slams into the listener with guitars that alternate between guttural chugs and frenzied screeches, before the track rolls into surprisingly catchy choruses that lose none of the heaviness.
’Concrete Bed’ swaps out the high-octane, pummelling rhythms for drawn out, crushing walls of distorted guitars that increase with intensity. ‘Crown’ brings back the energy with a phenomenal drum performance, alternating between thunderous verses and half-tempo choruses that demand that you get moving.
All of this is topped off with a visceral vocal performance that exudes a monstrously commanding presence. Nu-metal flows are delivered death metal aggression in an explosive display of what makes this new wave of heavy artists so brilliantly powerful to experience.
LOVELETTER feel poised to take the title of the next heavy act you need to know. Stylistically slick and musically thrilling, ‘A Place That Doesn’t Exist’ is the mark of a band executing a precise vision, and that sense of drive and determination makes it an EP impossible to ignore. A must listen body of work.
