SINGLE REVIEW: Alfie Erskine – Petty Girl

’…the debut single of a musician with a keen ear for what’s relevant in indie and pop right now…’

Already with a BBC Music Introducing recommendation under his belt alongside a pretty substantial social media presence, Alfie Erskine is an artist breaking into the Merseyside scene with quite the solid foundation to build from. The singer-songwriter is ambitious and tenacious, seeking not just to be another indie artist and instead provide something worth remembering. His debut effort, ‘Petty Girl’, may well do just that.

This is a gorgeous, breezy heartland rock tinged cut that fits in perfectly to the modern indie soundscape without blending into the background. Dreamy verses marked with a gently groovy bass and bright acoustics surge into driving, infectious choruses that play with wonderfully electrifying guitar riffs. That infectious energy is capitalised perfectly upon with a thrilling bridge segment marked by a guitar solo that is brimming with a charming sense of showmanship and flair.

Erskine himself has a voice that carves out lucious melodies whilst being framed gently by a raw rock edge. This is particularly the case during those anthemic choruses that you can easily visualise immense crowds dancing along to. The lyricism keeps things humble and relatable, Erskine positioned a lovestruck charmer in a relationship with someone whose communication skills are absent.

It’s an assortment of simple ingredients that come together to make something certain to appeal. ‘Petty Girl’ is the debut single of a musician with a keen ear for what’s relevant in indie and pop right now, and combining this with solid songwriting and a strong and likeable character feels like the recipe to the start of a bright career. Keep your eyes out for this name.
