SINGLE REVIEW: Nobody’s Secret – Over Me

Nobody’s Secret are the latest band to join the expansive north-west scene in the UK, with their brand new debut single, ‘Over Me’. Already with a strong sense of style and aesthetic, what they offer musically only serves to further cement their identity as a unique and refreshing rock band with soul and pop elements woven in.

Slack, swaggering bass notes reverberate beneath gently sparkling keys during stripped back yet smoking verses. This classy, soulful minimalism explodes into bombastic, passionate choruses marked by blisteringly distorted guitars and waves of glittering synths; an ebb and flow with the tides of sonic silk pouring forth from the band.

All of this provides the backing for a brilliantly soulful vocal performance that perfectly balances ferocity with smoothness. The central ‘you can’t get over me’ vocal hook is delivered with an electrifying sense of self-confidence and power, bringing together both the classical soul energy of Nina Simone with the contemporary rock thunder of perhaps Matt Bellamy.

Carrying musical talent, a clear artistic vision, and a real sense of passion, all of this makes for a very solid foundation for Nobody’s Secret. ‘Over Me’ offers the band a distinctive identity for them to expand from as they uncover who they truly are; it may well be worth keeping an eye on where this band goes.
