SINGLE REVIEW: The Throwaway Scene – Honeyface (Making a Scene)

’…arguably their most immense sounding track to date, sounding perfectly ready for bigger stages, bigger crowds, and bigger attention…’

All the way back in January of this year, Manchester-based four-piece The Throwaway Scene dropped their debut EP ‘On Death & Dying’, and made it clear that they are an alternative outfit you simply need to know; their conceptually charged blend of emo and post-hardcore is a force to be reckoned with. Surprisingly, 2024 seems to be far from over for the band, and last week saw the release of a brand-new single, ‘Honeyface (Making a Scene)’, and potentially a whole new era for this band.

Honeyface‘ sees The Throwaway Scene truly harnessing their pop-punk side, with a far greater focus on catchy melodies and anthemic choruses than on any of their previous releases. The result is arguably their most immense sounding track to date, sounding perfectly ready for bigger stages, bigger crowds, and bigger attention.

Vocalist Oliver Hame has always been a theatrical character throughout the existence of The Throwaway Scene, but it is on ‘Honeyface‘ that this has truly blossomed; throwaway spoken word bars and alternating vocal flows that embrace a sardonic, self-depreciating humour are brilliantly executed, perfectly capturing themes of isolation, mania, and failure.

On top of that, the instrumentals here feature some of the band’s most intricate work to date, especially in the guitar department; Tom Green-Morgan embellishes his ferocious riffing with intricate flourishes and frills that toy with discordance, giving what could be a straight-forwards emo cut a progressive, post-hardcore undertone. Furthermore, as with any The Throwaway Scene track, rhythms provided by Tom Ward and Sam Clark are bold and unrelenting, hauling you to your feet and forcing you to get moving.

To have started the year with a contender for the best EP of 2024, and then to have followed it up with a song that feels brilliantly fresh, you cannot help but wonder when the moment The Throwaway Scene explode into mainstream alternative consciousness is going to be. Between ferocious live performances and a continuous ability to write compelling, emotive, and even down-right fun material, they remain one of the upcoming UK bands you need to know.

They are a making a scene, and it is one you cannot take your eyes off.
