SINGLE REVIEW: Shel Khan – Foxhole

’…an experience that is not only compelling, but one that makes you yearn for more…’

Currently based out of Toronto, Shel Khan is an experienced musician with a clear aim to defy expectations. Rooted in pop, Khan makes a clear and conscientious effort to pull from genres all over the musical spectrum to conjure up intense and mesmerising tracks themed around ancestry, death, nature, and the self. This is incredibly apparent on her latest track, ‘Foxhole’.

Truly, Khan’s mantra of melding genres leads to some gorgeous and glossy moments on this startlingly hypnotic track. Gruff, simplistic guitar riffs, the likes of which one might expect from grunge or alternative metal, are layered over luscious looped electronic rhythms. Snaking between the layers are the bluesy, folk-flecked vocals of Khan, wrapped up in subtle yet rich harmonies.

This creative collision of sounds is not immediately catchy or outrageously infectious, but instead hooks you in on a deeper level, and before you know you are caught intimately within Khan’s world. The aura of mystique that they present, combined with their deeply human approach to music, makes for an experience that is not only compelling, but one that makes you yearn for more.

Consistently, across every music scene, it is the DIY arena that can offer some of the most interesting, memorable, and innovative artists. In the realms of pop, Shel Khan presents as one such artist; there is a drive to push the boundaries of pop present, and ‘Foxhole’ feels like just the beginning of a very exciting musical journey.
