SINGLE REVIEW: Centerfold – Trust Issues

Centerfold have been hard at work throughout 2024, putting themselves firmly on the Merseyside music map with their constant creative takes on retro rock genres. Ahead of their debut EP, the band have released another single, ‘Trust Issues’, and in doing so have cemented their upcoming release as one you will need to check out.

There’s a surprising heartland rock flair to this track, with its driving rhythmic sections and melancholic vocal melody that transitions perfectly from subdued to explosively heartfelt as the track alternates between verses and choruses. Guitars weave soaring rock passages above the track, whilst the vocals are the band’s most controlled and impressive to date; the final chorus of ‘Trust Issues‘ truly should come with a warning for being too impressively shiver inducing. All of this is brought to life with top quality production that is wholly unexpected for a band of this size.

What is possibly the most surprising aspect of this track is the pure polish that it has. Certainly, Centerfold have kept their focus restricted compared to previous releases, eschewing their genre-bending antics for a more direct and pure rock approach. In place of that wild ambition, however, is a feeling of perfect completeness; every element of this track works beautifully with every other element, enabling it to land with a powerful and surprisingly emotive impact.

It is incredibly easy to imagine ‘Trust Issues‘ blasting from a major rock radio station, not because the band have lost their edge, but because they have produced a rock anthem that demands your attention. Centerfold have crafted the sort of track that bands could spend their entire careers searching for, perfectly merging an appreciation of catchy hooks and mainstream appeal with their heavy, alternative roots. Their debut EP could truly be a very big release for Centerfold.
