SINGLE REVIEW: Spiritbox – Soft Spine

’…a rawness and venomous anger that arguably hasn’t been seen since the band’s earliest material…’

I’m frankly beginning to suspect that Spiritbox have never heard of ‘having a break’, because the Canadian metal behemoths are one of the hardest working and most consistent outfits around. Last year saw the release of their killer EP, ‘The Fear of Fear’, featuring the incredible ‘Cellar Door’. Since then the band have been hard at work touring, and now ahead of their headline dates across Europe, have release another brand new single, ‘Soft Spine’.

Certainly, Spiritbox could rest on their laurels. Their formula of immense metalcore laced with expansive pop melodies and gorgeous ambience is something they could easily keep revisiting. Instead, however, the band are masters of evolving, and on ‘Soft Spine’, the band jettison themselves in an even more abrasive, noisy, and industrial direction.

Courtney LaPlante’s vocals have always carried an air of the otherworldly, but the sheer brutality on display here is nothing short of delightfully hellish; the track explodes open with her declaring ‘you all deserve each other’, and does not cease erupting from there out. Riffs slam into the listener with unparalleled aggression, almost forgoing any semblance of structure and control.

It’s frantic stuff, showing a rawness and venomous anger that arguably hasn’t been seen since the band’s earliest material. For those haven’t been a fan of the band’s impactful but uber polished material as of later, then this offers a great point to give them a second chance. If this proves to be the start of another era in Spiritbox’s already fantastic legacy, then it could be their most ferocious one yet.
