SINGLE REVIEW: NEONshe – Never Let It Go

To say it has been a busy year for NEONshe would be quite the understatement. Between a steady stream of singles, her mindfulness themed ‘The Star Mindset‘ collection of writings, and moving back to Japan, what resonates clearly is that NEONshe has found the place in life she feels most artistically energised by. It feels as though all of this comes to a wonderful musical culmination on her latest single ‘Never Let It Go‘.

Just as with her previous single ‘Seasons‘, you can truly hear NEONshe becoming the complete artist that her potential always alluded to. Her vocals are gorgeous yet understated, trading impressive vocal acrobatics for rich and emotive harmonics, particularly during a surprisingly gospel tinged climax that is certain to induce shivers. On top of that, her first ever usage of Japanese within her lyricism is a wonderful touch, truly painting the impression that at this point in time is when the dreams she has strived to achieve have finally come to fruition.

All of this is backed up by a rich and complex instrumental that transitions from simple beginnings to a grandiose climax. Moments of pulsing bass intertwine with feathery layers of chiptune bleeps and beeps, whilst retro-tinged percussion gives the whole track an arena sized feel. Truly, it is a delight to hear the ideas that were manifested on her debut LP ‘J-POP‘ truly evolve into something that feels delightfully rich and ambitious.

‘Never Let It Go‘ makes it clear that NEONshe deserves be taken seriously as an artist. The light-hearted bubblegum princess character she presents with is wonderfully charismatic, but beneath that surface is an incredibly talented musician who only goes from strength to strength, taking adversity and using it to power herself and her art. A fantastic study in artistic growth.
