SINGLE REVIEW: alright (okay) – Elevator Etiquette

’…an anthem of sympathy for the worker, and a sharp ridicule of the ugly professionalism of the office…’

Entering the finals of Johnseyshots’s Battle of the Bands as arguably the favourites to win, Merseyside-based alright (okay) have ramped up their plans for domination with a brand new single. The four piece have been steadily developing an intense cult following, assisted by their electrifying live shows, and their latest single ‘Elevator Etiquette’ is certain to ensure that trend keeps growing.

A sardonic condemnation of office culture and workplace exploitation, there’s a bitter humour laced throughout the lyricism of the track. With its gently looping guitar riffs and shouted vocals from Alex Usher, there’s a slack, loose energy about ‘Elevator Etiquette’, perfectly capturing a restless, apathetic feeling. Jonah Lloyd provides some surprisingly intricate bass lines that reward repeated listens.

Softly sung choruses beautifully contrast the jagged punk energy that undercuts the verses, with guitarist Will Booth showcasing some particularly gorgeous and understated vocal talents. The track ramps up in the back half with an electrifying breakdown in a moment of occupational burn-out, before it drifts away with the promise of a lie-in.

It’s a brilliantly relatable affair, managing to both be an anthem of sympathy for the worker, and a sharp ridicule of the ugly professionalism of the office. Mostly importantly, however, is that alright (okay) have released simply another banger that demands your attention; the distinct energy and charisma that the band possesses feels certain to take them very, very far.
