’…the indication that there is far more to this band than one might expect…’
At long last, after releasing three brilliantly fun singles, danger dog have announced their debut EP. The Liverpool-based midwest emo outfit have been hard at work cultivating a strong following through their incredible live shows, packed with unreleased material that the fans already adore. Now, one such track has been unleashed, in the form of ‘Well You Know, I’m a Busy Man and a Plate’s a Plate’.
A far cry from their typical, jangly sound, ‘[…]Plate’ sees the band push further into heavy territory, with their screamo influences more apparent than ever on this weighty, melancholic track. Drawn-out, droning riffs repeat beneath the gravelly lower register vocals of Harry Hemming, giving the track something of a shoegaze, or perhaps even grunge, aesthetic.
The track vaults into a bristling second act that pushes Hemming’s screamed vocals to new extremes, with a visceral rage that burns just below the surface. An instrumental outro serves as a perfect reminder that danger dog are incredibly talented musicians, with a ferocious pseudo-breakdown buoyed by an electrifying percussion performance.
It’s an incredibly clever choice for a release; dedicated hardcore fans will appreciate having more of the band’s unreleased material available to stream, whilst more casual listeners and newcomers are given the indication that there is far more to this band than one might expect. The best may well be yet to come, although I’m uncertain the song titles will ever top this one.
