’…If you need a little more sapphic yearning in your life, then ‘Emily’ is a must listen…’
Stavenger-via-Liverpool singer-songwriter Mina My has returned once more, with a belated celebration of pride on this gorgeous, punchy new single, ‘Emily’. Whilst My has always maintained a distinct charm, on this track it truly feels like My is stepping into herself and becoming the artist her potential indicates she could be.
From the wistful lyricism, to the jangly guitar riffs, My’s latest track is as much her traditional indie pop style as it is midwest emo, finding itself in a wonderfully melancholic middle ground. Splashes of cymbals in the choruses drive the track forwards with an indie rock flair, whilst subtle details such as the handclaps in the second verse only truly reveal themselves upon repeated listens, rewarding the listener for their investment.
My’s lyricism is rich with sapphic yearning, admiring her companion from afar yet unable to make the steps to close the gap between them. There’s a dreaminess to it all, but My ensures that it feels painfully relatable and grounded in humanity. This is further enabled by her vocal delivery, marked by a gently raspiness that carries across beautifully to her upper register, giving her a real folkloric charm.
Certainly, what My has presented on this track is her most accomplished and complete work to date. Not only is it wonderfully produced and written, but the delivery by My helps the listener truly understand who she is not only as an artist, but as a person. If you need a little more sapphic yearning in your life, then ‘Emily’ is a must listen.
