SINGLE REVIEW: NEONshe – Seasons

’…a truly gorgeous track, with slick layers of synths layered atop one another in a portrait of colourful change…’

As NEONshe rapidly approaches the release of their sophomore record ‘Butterfly’, the DIY pop princess has been hard at work not only treating fans to a steady stream of singles, but working on her accompanying book, ‘The Star Mindset’, which details much of the ethos behind not only this record, but NEONshe as a person. This has continued this week, with another new track to add to your playlists in ‘Seasons’.

This is a truly gorgeous track, with slick layers of synths layered atop one another in a portrait of colourful change; thumping bass drives forwards whilst glittering chimes swirl ethereally above. As the track charges towards a stunning climax, bright, popping chiptune beats brush against the splendorous layers of luscious synths, all rounded off with a charged dance beat and wonderfully utilised layers of vocal harmonies.

On the topic of vocals, this is by far NEONshe’s most ambitious and impressive performance across her discography to date. Building from a lo-fi start marked with her trademark husky lower tones, the track sees her slowly grow in character and presence, culminating in a soaring back half of the track which incredible belted passages and wonderfully controlled upper register vocals. It truly captures both the apprehension of change and the glory of change perfectly.

Seasons’ exists as the sunshine through the rain, and a reminder that the rain needs to exist for you to grow. This latest era of NEONshe’s musical career has seen her delve into far more personal and introspective topics than prior, and the resulting tracks have been some of the most rewarding to date. Once more, her upcoming sophomore record remains one that you should remain anticipated for.
