‘…the belief and attitude of an arena headlining band, and perhaps the potential of one too…’
Above all else, what makes Deshine so compelling to listen to is a deep sense of realness to everything they do.
This is a band that does not care for the hyper-manufactured culture of the current musical landscape, and arm their revolution with classic rock’n’roll merged with soaring Britpop sensibilities. This creative ethos has already lead to two solid releases, but what the band have produced on ‘Take Me Along’ feels like their finest work to date.
One of the major surprises here is the far bigger focus on melody than on previous Deshine releases. Vocalist Donnie Franco maintains his trademark bold, Gallagher-esque drawl, but gently weaves in compelling melodies that make the track infinitely more catchy; this is particularly true during the choruses, as he employs falsetto during an infectious central vocal hook.
Of course, a major aspect of the band’s sound is that aforementioned immense blend of retro rock stylings, and that is no different on this track. Steady rhythms are weighted with heavy groove, especially with a particularly gorgeous bass line which meanders around the solid backbone of percussion. Jangly guitars decorate the track, layered with fuzzy riffs during the choruses and the swirling climax of the track. It’s a surprisingly dreamy affair, despite its punchy grit.
Deshine aren’t here to perform wild, avant-grade antics. Their music is simple, driving, and focused on the very foundations of modern rock music, and that clear artistic direction leads to a musical experience that you can’t help but engage with. Deshine have the belief and attitude of an arena headlining band, and perhaps the potential of one too.
