SINGLE REVIEW: Ugly Jumper – Decade Ago

’…a brilliantly accessible yet ambitious anthem that proves they are as just as fun as they are dramatic…’

Are you an ‘emo loser’? Then Ugly Jumper reckon they might just be for you.

The four-piece released their stunning, melancholic debut single ‘hate me, please’ earlier this year, and have since put on a fantastic headline show that marked them out as one of the standout talents of the Merseyside musical arena. Now, the band return with what may even be an improvement on their impressive debut, ‘Decade Ago’.

Scrappy punk undertones are decorated with the theatrical emo that one might expect from the likes of The Black Parade era My Chemical Romance; bright saxophone hooks punctuate the brilliantly catchy choruses, whilst verses blaze by, buoyed by rambunctious, jittering percussion and punchy bass lines. Every single moment of this track fees purposeful and well utilised, including a particularly fun and cathartic bridge segment.

KC’s vocal delivery is undeniable in its character and charm; there’s an acerbic wit to it all, as they capture the weight of the existential dread of your twenties whilst delivering some genuinely impressive melodic passages. She is an incredibly distinct vocal presence, and frankly one of the most unique performers on the Liverpool circuit right now.

hate me, please’ was a startling and surprising choice for a debut single, yet one that made Ugly Jumper an outfit impossible to forget. ‘Decade Ago’, however, serves as a brilliantly accessible yet ambitious anthem that proves they are as just as fun as they are dramatic. Ugly Jumper have a potential that is rare to see; you won’t want to miss out on this journey.
