’…further proof that the growing midwest emo scene of the UK is just as packed with talent as it’s US based big brother…’
After their stand-out show in support of Ugly Jumper, which saw them contending with a drum kit dissolving on a molecular level, Vienna left the audience with the knowledge that all of the tracks they have yet to release are just as good as the ones they already have. Listeners didn’t have to wait long, however, as the band quickly announced the release of their impeccably titled third single, ‘Ratatouille? I hardly know her’.
A gloriously fun emo affair, Vienna perfectly capture the free-wheeling yet melancholic spirit of midwest-emo on this track. What immediately stands out is the evolution of the band’s vocal section, with a greater focus on catchy melodies, and punchy screamed backing vocals during the choruses, ensuring that the track feels both more compelling than ever, and more fleshed-out than ever. There’s a real undeniable charm to it all that is impossible to ignore.
Instrumentally, Vienna have also pushed themselves further, with complex yet nuanced performances from all involve that culminate in an energetic song packed with delightful controlled chaos. The fuzzy bass lines pack a jagged groove, whilst noodling guitar riffs cascade around the listener as the track rattles through punchy choruses and a bustling bridge section.
It’s the sort of rambunctious and scrappy emo banger that promises a killer live performance, and offers further proof that the growing midwest emo scene of the UK is just as packed with talent as its US based big brother. Vienna are the new cult favourites you need on your mixtape playlist.
