SINGLE REVIEW: Carleigh Mack – Crop Circles

’…the star quality of someone ready to become the next indie darling…’

After a stunning performance at LIPA 2ube Extra, Carleigh Mack remained firmly on my radar, especially with the promise of a brand new track releasing soon. Born in New Hampshire, US, the now Liverpool-based artist possesses a star quality on stage that makes her truly feel like something special in the folk-pop scene, and thankfully, that charm carries across perfectly into her latest track, ‘Crop Circles’.

Sometimes, what makes something wonderful to experience is the beautiful execution of simple elements. There are no flashy stunts here; Mack doesn’t attempt any ridiculous vocal acrobatics, and the bulk of the track is kept restricted to guitar, bass, and drum machine. What this culminates in, however, is a gorgeously wistful affair that is heavy with a melancholy humanity, built with a charming round-esque structure that slowly builds layer upon layer.

Mack’s lyricism teases at ideas of the gothic and fantastical, yet remain just rooted enough in the reality of small-town Americana that it exists in a wonderfully liminal space between deeply relatable and startlingly imaginative. Vocals are delivered with a warm folk twang, managing to possess both a rich warmth and a tender melancholy.

All of this culminates in a song that will provide as much joy to country fans as it does indie fans, and as much joy to folk fans as it does emo fans. Carleigh Mack has the star quality of someone ready to become the next indie darling; get her on your playlists, and be one of the first to the party.
