’…perfectly captures the sounds and creativity that are at the heart of the underground alternative scene…’
The UK alternative scene is alive and thriving right now. From rising stars Static Dress, to grassroots champions Rozemary, there is a real, continuous drive to push the alternative scene to new, ambitious and exciting frontiers. One such outfit is the Leeds based Bodyweb. After their inventive, atmospheric, and unconventional debut mini album, ‘train_wreck_simulation‘, the band toured alongside Static Dress and have received acclaim for their frenzied live performances.
Now the band are back with a brand new single, which has pushed their boundaries even further than before. ‘pull the plug‘ is powered by a ferocious aggression that features in every aspect of the song, as it thunders through a wide array of styles and ideas. The track explodes open with hardcore punk, before surging through stripped-back breakbeat rhythms and unfurling into a visceral yet surprisingly catchy main body of post-hardcore; despite violent screamed vocals taking up the bulk of the track, the band’s capacity for weaving a compelling melody is impressive.
Then as quickly as it reaches an apex, the track collapses back in on itself with cataclysmic force, hurtle towards an abrasive, disconcerting breakdown in the climax. With a run time that doesn’t even reach the 2:30 mark, it’s shocking that the band have not only managed to cram so many ideas into this track, but have also managed to make them work so well alongside each other. Both a bristling indictment of humanity’s capacity to mess with things far beyond our control, and a track that urges you to spinkick the nearest person to you, you can’t help but feel like Bodyweb are the kind of intelligently creative musicians that will come to define this era of hardcore and post-hardcore.
All-in-all, ‘pull the plug‘ functions as the perfect evolution from their debut release, and perfectly captures the sounds and creativity that are at the heart of the underground alternative scene right now. If you haven’t been paying attention to Bodyweb, then use this track as a chance to change that, because they’re already well on their way to taking over the scene.
