SINGLE REVIEW: Haytor – This Is The Ending

‘…’This Is The Ending’ makes for a cathartic breath of fresh air from start to finish...’

Based out of the southwest of the UK, this four-piece outfit have been around for quite some time now, presenting with a distinct, energetic, groove-laden sound that easily snags you as a listener. Whilst numbers are no indicator of a band’s worth, it is shocking that Haytor aren’t far bigger than they currently are, although that could see some change with this latest track, capturing the UK political zeitgeist in a cynical yet realistic manner.

This Is The Ending‘ holds a magnifying glass over the predatory populist politicians that prey upon the working class folks of towns left behind by the modern world. Haytor not only manage to capture the anger of generations of hard working individuals left behind in a post-industrial landscape, but do so with great empathy, pointing to their anger being appropriated, and their desire to make a change for good kept dampened by an economic climate that pushes you to focus on just surviving.

All of this is underpinned by a driving instrumental backing that is loaded with bright synths and soaring guitar solos, almost reminiscent you would find on the best 80’s rock compilation disc you could listen to. The soaring lead melodies are backed by catchy backing vocal hooks during the choruses, whilst the moments in which the guitar takes centre stage are brilliantly empowering, despite the nihilistic overtones of the track.

What Haytor have produced is not only a brilliantly infectious track, but a political track that puts so many political bands to shame, with its nuance, humanity, and vulnerability shining through. The political isolation that so many feel across the UK is something that has been surprisingly underexplored by musicians, so ‘This Is The Ending‘ makes for a cathartic breath of fresh air from start to finish. Give Haytor a listen; they might just be your favourite undiscovered indie band yet.
