SINGLE REVIEW: Followship (feat. pulses.) – Special

There’s only one cinematic universe that you should be keeping your eye on, and that is the pulses. cinematic universe. The Virginia outfit have worked with some of the freshest and most exciting bands in the alternative scene right now, such as nightlife, The Callous Daoboys and With Sails Ahead. Now, after touring alongside them, fellow Virginia outfit Followship join these ranks with a blistering little collaboration, ‘Special‘, once again putting themselves on the map as THE post-hardcore band to watch.

Consistently, Followship have stood out thanks to their incredible capacity to effortlessly flow between soaring melodies and ferocious aggression, and that remains true on this latest single. Once again, vocalist Devin Hatcher is an impressive presence, with an effortlessly slick vocal delivery throughout, accompanied by some great upper register vocal hooks in the choruses. Guitars surge around the listener with electrifying complexity, whilst the percussion crams energy into every second of this brisk track.

The band have also not wasted their pulses. feature, with their touring compatriots putting in a killer verse around the half-way mark that simply oozes that trademark pulses. coolness that has come to dominate whatever they touch. This perfectly evolves into the climactic second half of the track, with a rhythmic switch-up accompanied by spiralling synth melodies, flashy guitar work, and punchy bass lines that add delightful amounts groove to the whole affair.

For a long while, collaboration within the alternative music space seemed to have fallen out of favour. Yet it is tracks such as this one that go to show just what brilliance can be produced when a collective of artists work to build one another up. For so long, the math-infused brand of post-hardcore that Followship touch upon has been dominated by the same handful of bands and ideas; give ‘Special‘ a listen, and you won’t be going back to them.
