SINGLE REVIEW: The Drivers Club – Y R U SO LOUD?

‘…A simplistic indie rock veneer quickly dissolves and reveals a rollicking, funk-infused fiesta for your ears…’

With their debut headline show next month, there’s never been a better time to check out The Drivers Club. The Liverpool based four-piece saw fantastic success with their debut single ‘Lost In Your Mind (Psychokiller)’, and followed it up with a feel-bad summer anthem in ‘So Fine’. Now, the band have made it three-for-three with their energetic new banger, ‘Y R U SO LOUD?’.

This is a brilliantly well-crafted track that constantly keeps you guessing. A simplistic indie rock veneer quickly dissolves and reveals a rollicking, funk-infused fiesta for your ears. Bass lines suddenly switch from simple root notes to delightful flourishes, whilst the percussion consistently snaps between a jarring hi-hat loop and driving rock rhythms.

A fantastically executed funk styled breakdown in the back half is begging to be played to a live crowd; it’s hard to resist dancing along to it in your living room, let alone your finest local indie venue. All throughout this, the vocals are once again powerful and well-delivered, with a wry humour that does the band’s grounded yet acerbic lyricism justice.

Some bands are destined to remain as champions of their local circuit, and there is nothing wrong with that. ‘Y R U SO LOUD?’, however, feels indicative of a band with a much bigger potential. The Drivers Club feel like they’re going to be an act larger indie bands will be desperately trying to snap up to open for them; there is a real sense that The Drivers Club have a flair only they possess, and indie fans are going to love it.
