‘…’Another Glass’ feels ready to be played at both a solid night out at the local student union, and to the best hidden-gem jazz bar you can find…’
Liverpool indie-funk fusion sextet Roscoe Street hit the scene earlier this year with their wonderfully catchy debut single, ‘Overdraft’. Since then, the band have been playing packed venues all over the city, including the Cavern, establishing themselves as a breath of fresh air in the indie scene. Their second single, ‘Another Glass’, capitalises on this perfect, and singles the band out as real ones to watch.
This is a cheeky, witty little cut, composed of playful lyricism and even more playful instrumentation. Dealing with romantic jealousy and feeling unable to compete on multiple levels, Louis Williams’ lyrics are both brilliantly relatable and humorously self-aware; his date’s 6’6” ‘boy best friend’ who takes her on fancy night outs is the ultimate romantic competitor personified, despite her evidently being interested in the simple drinks and fun attitude of Williams.
All of it is personified perfectly by the music, which once again demonstrates Roscoe Street’s great potential, bringing overt jazz and funk ideas into the realm indie rock anthems. Shuffling percussion jitters away beneath slick guitar licks and a simple, punchy saxophone hook. The bass meanders through the track with an effortless coolness, whilst the production here makes every element feel crisp and sharp. It’s an absolute delight to the ears.
Alongside peers such as Bonk! and The Drivers Club, there’s a real sense that Roscoe Street want to take the indie scene that has come to dominate Liverpool, and push it in new, fresh directions. Just as with their debut single, ‘Another Glass’ feels ready to be played at both a solid night out at the local student union, and to the best hidden-gem jazz bar you can find; familiar, yet unique. There really could be something special here; keep a close eye on Roscoe Street.
