’…it maintains their theatrical indie melancholy, yet presents it in an entirely new way…’
Damn the Weather’s return continues once more, with the release of their brand new single, ‘ghostlite’. Earlier this year, the Phoenix-based act released their phenomenal single ‘glowcloud’, which pushed their theatrical indie sound in a more electronic, experimental, and ambient direction. The band continue down this path, and in the process make it clear that this new era is one of truly luxurious soundscapes.
’ghostlite’ exists almost definitely as a smaller piece of a wider concept that the band have yet to reveal, whether thematic or narrative. Rather than sticking with a standard song structure, the track builds from a quiet introduction to an immense climax, featuring some of vocalist Jon Watkins’ most ambitious and powerful vocal work to date; a pure, desperate rock energy that almost sounds like Watkins himself is tearing at the seams.
Ethereal violin melodies peak through the curtain of ambience to add some brightness to the soundscape, whilst the rock core of guitar, bass, and percussion evolve as the track progresses, from a textural element to a defining aspect of the immense closing moments. It’s a phenomenal reinterpretation of the band’s own identity, as similar to their prior single ‘glowcloud’, it maintains their theatrical indie melancholy, yet presents it in an entirely new way.
With allusions to an upcoming EP on their Instagram, Damn the Weather certainly look to be entering their most exciting and boundary pushing era to date. ‘ghostlite’ feels like a look behind the curtain of whatever is coming up from the band. Make sure you also give their hidden gem of a debut record a spin whilst you keep a very close eye on them.
