’…’Fruit Wine’ isn’t the sound of a band growing up, but a band embracing their roots with experienced hands…’
It’s just under a year since we last heard from Washington D.C duo, Origami Angel. The pair have established themselves as one of the most popular acts to arise from the fifth wave of emo, and last year released their mixtape ‘The Brightest Days’, a celebration of a shitty vacation and the death of their youth, soundtracked with their trademark sparkly emo sound, merged with surf-rock and jangle-pop influences.
Now, ahead of their upcoming tour with Microwave, the band have released a brand new single, ‘Fruit Wine’. Origami Angel lean more in a pop-punk direction on this new cut, without losing any of their core identity in the process; those whimsical melodies, gorgeous harmonies, and so often self-deprecating lyrics are here and accounted for, and sometimes sounding better than ever.
Instead of complex noodling guitar passages, the band indulge in punchy, distorted riffs, and pummel the listener with a brilliantly executed breakdown in the back half, picking back up on ideas they’ve hinted at and refining them with the polish of experience. The percussion laying the foundations throughout is snappy and deftly executed throughout, keeping things feeling sharp and energetic.
The production here truly shines, allowing the vocal harmonies to feel resonant and expansive, which when set against the crunchy, straight-cut punk sound of the instrumentals, makes for a wonderfully unique sonic experience that you can only get with Origami Angel.
Truly, this feels like one of the band’s most well-polished tracks to date, indicative of the outfit transitioning from fifth-wave emo darlings, to cult legends. ‘Fruit Wine’ isn’t the sound of a band growing up, but a band embracing their roots with experienced hands, and that sort of ethos is what makes Origami Angel so increasingly popular.
