’…A pummelling assault on the senses from start to finish, this blistering track is 2:24 of pure, venomous aggression…’
Hitting the scene with their debut single late last year, LOVELETTER are one of the newest heavy acts around, and one that truly feels like they’re part of a new wave of heavy musicians. With a finely tuned blend of hardcore, metalcore, and a touch of nu metal, they fit perfectly into the modern scene, especially with their latest track ‘Choke’.
A pummelling assault on the senses from start to finish, this blistering track is 2:24 of pure, venomous aggression. Guitars are down tuned and distorted to form walls of incessant, ferocious noise, marked by moments of screeching feedback, whilst percussion thunders through a variety of polyrhythmic passages that refuses to allow you get comfortable with the track.
It’s impressive how much the band is able to fit into such a small run-time, from the surprisingly catchy introduction, to the breakdowns that crash into the listener. The vocals throughout are varying degrees of delightfully malicious, from pure, unrestrained growls, to passages where they are distorted and buried intentionally into the mix; it gives a truly claustrophobic feeling to the track that only adds to its violent catharsis.
Being invested in a music scene for long enough permits you insight into the different waves that come and go, even if it’s not immediately obvious. However, with ‘Choke’, LOVELETTER feels like a band from a new breed of heavy musicians that couldn’t have existed ten years ago, pushing the boundaries alongside contemporaries like Thrown and PSYCHO-FRAME. It’s a good time to be a music fans.
