SINGLE REVIEW: The Matriarchy – Parasite

’…boldly distinct enough that you can’t mistake them for anyone else, yet just familiar enough that you’ll be easily sucked into their world…’

The latest act to join the new wave of Liverpool based artists is the alternative rock four-piece The Matriarchy. Already possessing a great live set (which you might be reading more about very soon!), ‘Parasite’ shows that the band are just as exciting in the studio as they are on stage.

The expansive melodies and huge choruses of alternative rock are present and accounted for, but all of it is delivered with a raw edge that you might expect from an alternative metal act, ultimately positioning the band’s sound in a very unique place that eludes clear definition or direct comparison. And that’s a good thing; The Matriarchy sound boldly distinct enough that you can’t mistake them for anyone else, yet just familiar enough that you’ll be easily sucked into their world.

The spoken word passage that builds into a particularly killer breakdown is a brilliant moment that elevates the track tenfold, with vocalist Charlotte Rhodes displaying a frankly baffling stylistic range. Across the track, they manouvre from a smoky blues delivery, to guttural, ferocious unclean vocals, whilst the instrumentals shift around them from danceable alternative rock to cool hard rock, before vaulting into a breakdown that you might anticipate from Bring Me The Horizon.

It’s a deeply unique debut that places The Matriarchy firmly within your sights as a band not to lose track of. ‘Parasite’ is indicative of a band that possesses not only an understanding of how to craft a catchy song, but also a creative streak and a desire to ensure the listener can never quite guess what’s coming next.
