’…they continue to maintain their status as Liverpool’s biggest band you’ve yet to hear…’
Certainly, the algorithm might love it if I reviewed a certain artist today, but do you really need yet another opinion on a billionaire’s latest effort that will sell millions anyway?
Instead, we’re taking a look at the latest offering from the Merseyside rock outfit, Deshine. The four-piece have started to develop something of a cult following in the local region, thanks to their ferocious swagger and razor sharp wit, along with producing huge slabs of rock and roll goodness that just beg to be blasted live in your favourite local basement venue. Now, the band have dropped their third single, ‘Let Me Be Free’, and ensure that they continue to maintain their status as Liverpool’s biggest band you’ve yet to hear.
Deshine still retain their scrappy, unapologetic rock and roll spirit, but on this occasion pivot that energy in a slightly more psychedelic direction. Drawn out vocal melodies and hypnotic, repetitive guitar riffs wrap around the listener in a beguiling fashion, whilst the band ensure that their rough punk edges remain unpolished and raw; the pace might be slower than previous tracks such as ‘Sally’, but the energy remains potent and addictive .
There’s a playful arrogance to it all that captures the drugged up chaos of the 70’s as much as it does the stadium-sized swagger and excess of the 90’s; certainly, fans of the likes of Oasis and The Stone Roses will find plenty to enjoy here, especially thanks to the enigmatic drawl the vocals. You’ll struggle to find many front people at the grassroots level with as much character and effortlessly cool charisma.
Yes, Merseyside has remained a bastion of indie and straight-cut rock, but much of this sound has lost its bite, remaining enjoyable but becoming all too radio-friendly. Deshine represent something revolutionary, in that they aren’t attempting to revolutionise their sound. ‘Let Me Be Free’ isn’t made for the charts, or Radio City playlists, or once rock oriented major league festivals, but with Deshine’s attitude and relentlessness, they might just find themselves there anyway.
