SINGLE REVIEW: NEONshe – Kyoto

’…a superb note for NEONshe to begin her latest musical adventure on; the stage set for an era of growth, adventure, and learning who you truly are…’

Self-proclaimed ‘certified princess in pink’ NEONshe has returned once more. Known for her bubblegum pop spin on J-Pop stylings, the artist has had a busy few years, with her debut album being followed up by a steady collection of singles, including the fantastic ‘Ride the Wave’ featuring JeyCordz. Now, ahead of her sophomore record ‘Butterfly’, she has gifted us a token of appreciation for her new home, ‘Kyoto’.

A bustling, chiptune-laced pop cut, ‘Kyoto’ is themed all around NEONshe’s return to Japan, following a few years living in her home town of Manchester. As with any NEONshe song, it’s a bright and sparkling affair, yet this time features something of a wistful undertone; an optimistic apprehension, capturing both excitement and uncertainty.

A lot of this is thanks to NEONshe’s vocals. For the most part, she is an understated yet gorgeously utilised presence within the track, balancing the bright chimes of the instrumental backing. However, towards the track’s climax, she vaults into some particularly impressive soaring harmonies that are indicative of her maturing as a musician; a depth and richness that only comes with experience and passion.

Kyoto’ is a superb note for NEONshe to begin her latest musical adventure on; the stage set for an era of growth, adventure, and learning who you truly are. NEONshe remains a joyful and colourful presence in a world that often can seem very grey. Keep an eye out for the new record ‘Butterfly’ later this year.
