SINGLE REVIEW: Mina My – Her Power

’…a welcome addition to the Merseyside musical scene; her bedroom-pop stylings add some much needed variety to the indie world of the region…’

Norway’s finest export since Freia Melkesjokolade, Mina My, is back once more with her brand new single, ‘Her Power’. Last year, the Liverpool-based singer-songwriter kicked off her career with the wonderful and whimsical debut single, ‘I Miss Your Dog’, and has found herself to be something of a staple on the Liverpool indie scene. That success is certain to continue with this empowered feminist anthem.

My’s DIY stylings carry through from her debut single, but instead of pursuing a jangle-pop vibe, My has moved more towards a 90’s grunge sort of sound, with fuzzy, punchy guitar riffs and simple yet catchy melodies, layered over the top of a steady, almost battle-cry-like rhythm that matches forwards. It’s a pleasant musical evolution that doesn’t stray too far from My’s core identity, yet provides some interesting versatility to her sonic palette.

My is a playful yet resolute presence throughout, delivering her vocals with a scrappy punkishness that both calls for fellow women to sing along, whilst ensuring that the actual importance of her message is not lost. It’s all incredibly charming, yet also substantial in its meaning and energy, guaranteed to go down a storm in a live setting.

Mina My is a welcome addition to the Merseyside musical scene; her bedroom-pop stylings add some much needed variety to the indie world of the region. ‘Her Power’ is a defiant anthem that is a much needed reminder that misogyny needs confronting directly and immediately.
