’…a pure shot of musical adrenaline; catchy enough to stay in your head, scrappy enough to feel like proper rock…’
Late last month saw the latest single from Liverpool based hard rock outfit, Red Coven. Fronted and directed by creative mastermind Sophie Ekins, the project’s latest track ‘Broken Mirror Glass’, is a pure shot of musical adrenaline; catchy enough to stay in your head, scrappy enough to feel like proper rock, and a thrilling amount of fun to listen to from start to finish.
Gritty guitars chug by, with various melodies and riffs weaving in and out of one another in a hard rock symphony; it’s an incredibly clever take on a formula that could easily have produced something far less interesting. This is particularly true during the back half of the track, as distorted guitars and bass collide with one another in a scorching instrumental break, delivered with a real ferocious energy.
The multitude of guitars are layered atop of punchy percussion that is allowed to maintain a raw energy thanks to the track’s production and mixing; instead of being polished to a fault, the percussion is allowed to maintain an electrifying presence in the track, as if being performed live.
All of this provides a wonderful backing for the vocals of Ekins; there’s a hard, blues rock edge to her performance that is combined with a pop charisma, culminating in a performance that feels like it’s from some lost cult legend femme rocker from the 90’s.
The bridge in particular is a fantastic moment, as the instruments pull back to allow Ekins chance to truly stand front and centre, with a vocal tone hovering somewhere between Gwen Stefani and Kate Bush; there’s a real style and presence to Ekins that cannot be denied.
Red Coven’s capacity for producing something that feels both delightfully retro yet with a refreshing modern twist is great; ‘Broken Mirror Glass’ is a track that belongs not just on the stage of your favourite local rock venue, but playing on the biggest rock radio channels, scratching that itch for some proper rock and roll without feeling dated.
