’…a perfect follow-up single for the band, immediately diversifying their sonic palette…’
Early this year, indie rock four-piece The Drivers Club treated us to their debut single under their new moniker. The Liverpool-based band, formerly known as Waiting Til Marriage, provided a powerful, driving rock anthem in the form of ‘Lost in Your Mind (Psychokiller)’, packing a phenomenal vocal performance against some electrifying and swaggering instrumentals.
Now the band have returned once more, and this time take things in a little bit of a Britpop direction, whilst throwing in a little funk spice to keep things interesting. ‘So Fine’ makes for a perfect follow-up single for the band, immediately diversifying their sonic palette, and making it clear that there’s plenty of reason to maintain interest in what they have to offer.
Existential dread has never sounded quite so catchy, as The Drivers Club grapple with a ruling class that seems driven on pushing the planet to the brink for a few extra pounds in their pockets. The band alternate between funk tinged verses, marked with simple yet punchy bass lines, and huge guitar driven choruses that are built for arena stages; the central ‘it’s fine, so fine’ hook is brilliantly infectious, simply begging to be played before a live audience. As with their debut, the vocals here are top notch, with a perfect blend of pure power, and genuine character.
The jangly guitars and sparkling melodies, accompanied by the nihilistic and sardonic wit of the lyrics, leaves the track having all the potential to be the perfect ‘feel-bad’ anthem of your (increasingly hotter) summers. Tackling the bigger issues isn’t often on the agenda for indie rock outfits, but The Drivers Club proved that not only can they do so, but they can make it sound fun too.
