’…not just a collection of very talented musicians, but a band with something interesting to give to the modern indie rock scene…’
There must be something in the waters in Merseyside, because this is the second simply great funk themed project from the region I’ve covered this bank holiday weekend.
Roscoe Street are a six piece heralding from Liverpool that seeks to bridge the gap between genres as varied as funk, indie, and RnB. The band have been steadily building a live reputation within the city, and with their debut single, that momentum is certain only to accelerate.
Featuring a wonderfully luscious palette of sounds, ‘Overdraft’ blends funk with indie rock to produce something that is guaranteed to appeal to fans of both genres. The track grapples with attempting to build a relationship whilst still being held captive by the party lifestyle; thematically and sonically, there’s a youthful exuberance that perfectly captures the student experience of the city.
Scattered percussion is layered over a simple yet groovy bass line, whilst a particularly gorgeous saxophone melodies croons softly in the background, before taking the reigns on a superb instrumental bridge. Not only is there a real technical proficiency, the band demonstrate a clear understanding of what is too much, and manage to keep things feeling slick and understated throughout in an effortlessly cool manner.
The track is masterfully mixed, with the powerful yet silky smooth vocals resting atop a complex assembly of instrumental elements. The manner in which different aspects of the track rise up and approach the listener, such as the brilliantly punchy guitar melodies and rousing brass in the back half of the track, is magical to behold, and rewards the listener for repeated listening of the track.
For a debut song, what Roscoe Street have produced is deeply impressive. ‘Overdraft’ marks the band out as not just a collection of very talented musicians, but a band with something interesting to give to the modern indie rock scene, taking accessible stylings and embellishing them in fun and inventive ways. The perfect track to accompany the sunnier days of Spring.
