‘…not only is ‘Our New Kingdom’ the perfect swansong for what has come before, but acts as a supremely exciting springboard for whatever is to come next…’
Having already released two solid full-length records, Manchester’s Asleep At The Helm has established themselves as one of the most underrated metalcore outfits in the current scene. There are no gimmicks to their sound; what you get is simply 100% pure sonic adrenaline, with huge choruses, ferocious verses, versatile vocals, and superb instrumental performances. This has only improved even further over recent singles, and has culminated in what the band have declared to be ‘the last song before evolution‘, ‘Our New Kingdom‘.
From start to finish, this blistering cut simply refuses to let up; a grandiose arrangement of a church organ and choral vocals explodes into an incendiary heavy onslaught that pulls as much influence from hardcore punk and deathcore as it does the band’s metalcore roots. The band’s dual vocalists sound better than ever, with high screams and guttural lows colliding with unholy fury across the span of some of the band’s most aggressive verses to date.
Huge choruses with compelling melodies rise up out of the ashes, losing none of the track’s raw, aggressive edge, yet providing a wonderfully electrifying tonal shift. The vicious desperation that permeates much of the rest of the track translates brilliantly into pure, blinding defiance, punctuated by some of the band’s finest clean vocal work to date.
If this the final track before the band achieves an evolution, then not only is ‘Our New Kingdom‘ the perfect swansong for what has come before, but acts as a supremely exciting springboard for whatever is to come next for Asleep At The Helm. With any justice, finally this band will achieve some of the notoriety they so desperately deserve.
