’…a theatrical, dark aggression buoyed by catchy melodies, technical proficiency, and sparkling production…’
In recent years, many metalcore fans have declared that the genre is in serious trouble. Saturated with bands that simply rehash the same tropes that acts such as Bring Me The Horizon perfected in the late 00’s and early 10’s, people are quick to declare metalcore a dead genre, destroyed by lack of innovation.
However, take a moment to dive beneath the surface, and there is a wealth of bands carving out their own unique takes on the genre. Take, for example, Manchester four-piece Auraboros. Arising back in 2020, the band have been hard at working crafting their own style, pulling influences from the likes of Ice Nine Kills and Architects, and embellishing it further with their own creative approach.
This is exemplified perfectly on the band’s new track, ‘Contemplating’, which brings a theatrical, dark aggression buoyed by catchy melodies, technical proficiency, and sparkling production. Vocalist Aisling Killey is a ferocious performer, her vocals heavy with a visceral bitterness and contempt that leads to a phenomenal lyrical delivery. It’s a dark track, grappling with self-destructive tendencies and the suffocating weight of depression, teetering between lucidity and psychosis.
The track snakes between soaring choruses and ferocious verses, guitars alternating between complex melodies and thunderous, chugging riffs. The percussion throughout is particularly electrifying, rattling through intricate passages with a relentless energy and an appreciation of exactly what the song requires, whether that be a complex fill, or a simply steady backbone.
An appearance in the back half from the great nothing’s Leo Craig is very welcomed, his characteristic robust and powerful vocals perfectly complementing the pure aggression of Killey during an explosive bridge segment. The pair trade bars during the final chorus of the track in a particularly captivating performance.
Auraboros feel like a band that could go far. There’s a real passion to their music, and an attitude to their performances; once you’ve heard them, you couldn’t mistake Auraboros for anyone else. ‘Contemplating’ is by far the band’s greatest musical achievement to date, proving that if you just dig a little deeper, metalcore is doing just fine.
