’…simply, from start to finish, a pure delight to listen to, bringing the focus squarely on what guitar driven rock is capable of in 2024…’
Born back in 2019 from the creative minds of brothers Jacob Jones and Ben Jones, with addition of Jacob Naylor, Liverpool based trio The Garnetts are one of the many indie acts rising through the ranks of the exciting Merseyside scene.
Earlier this year, the band released their latest single, ‘Still Running’, and perfectly consolidated their mantra of a nostalgic, captivating, and fresh sound into a brilliant bite size chunk of guitar driven indie rock.
Flamenco-flecked guitars decorate the verses, as simple yet punchy percussion drives the track forwards. Everything is performed with a sharpness and precision that gives the track some real biting character, contrasted by brief moments of luscious and reverb soaked ambience that punctuate the track.
It’s also particularly impressive how the band being back those core musical ideas in the second verse, yet embellish upon them in subtle ways to add some spice; the bass now more prominent and distorted, whilst the percussion seems to bring in some woodblock beats to truly hammer down on that tango flair the track possesses.
The choruses pack a straightforward and powerful rock punch, with gritty riffs set against soaring and catchy melodies. Vocal harmonies are utilised wonderfully here to add some real depth to the choruses, whilst the include of some light keys is adds brightness to the soundscape.
It’s an incredibly well put together track, handled by musicians who evidently have a lot of experience and talent; there’s nothing in this track that feel wildly out of place, nor is any moment of the brisk run time wasted on ideas that go nowhere. ‘Still Running’ is simply, from start to finish, a pure delight to listen to, bringing the focus squarely on what guitar driven rock is capable of in 2024.
