Based out of Liverpool, Thalia’s Grace are slowly beginning to build up quite the collection of tracks. The alternative four-piece released three singles last year, including the gorgeous ‘Comfort’, and last month were selected as one of the performing acts at the pop-up shop events for Crawlers’ debut record.
Now, the band are back once more with their unrepentant new single, ‘Running Out Of Ways’, and this may well be the band’s finest work to date. Certainly, a cursory glance at the band’s social media indicates a real pride in this track, and that kind of enthusiasm is infectious.
Jittering percussion rattles by just atop a snaking bass line, loaded with a subtle groove. Ghostly vocal harmonies contrast the murky grunge soundscape perfectly, almost as if summoned by Lauren Louise‘s lead vocal melodies out from the smoky instrumentals. Louise casts a weary, isolated, desperate figure, backed into a corner with only increasingly dangerous means of escape available.
These moody verses leap into charged choruses, packed with catchy melodies from both the wistful vocals and fuzzed-out guitars. The elements in isolation are simple, but layered together in a way that makes the track beguiling; the way Thalia’s Grace are able to convey the track’s desperation through their individual performances is marvellous. Gracia Baines‘ percussion work in particular is a startlingly refreshing experience, producing rhythms that shift and shudder with an unexpected complexity.
There’s a real relevance to Thalia’s Grace’s sound, fitting right in alongside artists that have pursued that 90’s grunge and shoegaze revival that has become increasingly popular in the indie realms. However, don’t take that as a mark of inauthenticity or a lack of creativity; the artistry of Thalia’s Grace lends itself perfectly to these pensive, melancholic sounds.
‘Running Out Of Ways’ captures both a grand melodrama and fierce rawness, culminating in a magical performance that makes it a must listen for indie fans.
