SINGLE REVIEW: Paint Me In Colour – Pick Me Up

’…a band just has something that makes you believe that, with a bit of luck and drive, they are going to go very, very far. It’s cliché, but that je ne sais quoi is real, and Paint Me In Colour have it…’

Sure, you all should listen to this track, but my hospitality workers out there? Oh boy, you REALLY should listen to this track.

Paint Me In Colour are a band on the Merseyside circuit that have been hard at work for quite some time, crafting their own place in what is truly beginning to become a very exciting scene. With headline gigs at both The Quarry and Kazimier Stockroom under their belts, it’s clear that Paint Me In Colour are giving the people something they want with their creative spin on classic indie concepts.

That continues with their latest single, ‘Pick Me Up’, which releases midnight tonight. Pulling influence from bands such as Paramore and Nothing But Thieves, the outfit have crafted a rallying cry for those of us stuck in the mud of the mundanity of working life; it’s an uplifting track, but also one that gives an honest and witty look at the mind-numbing existence of being stuck in the working-class grind.

The track kicks off with slick, straightforwards rhythms, with stomping percussion and thumping bass lines driving the song along as vocalist Liv Springer delivers her performance with a bluesy grit. Fuzzy, reverb tinged guitar passages weave catchy riffs and layer the track with a nice amount of texture, allowing the rhythm department to take centre-stage.

The choruses are unbelievably catchy, with funky bass lines grooving away as Springer delivers undeniably infectious hooks that are guaranteed to be stuck with you the rest of the day, week, and probably month. The drum fill in that post-chorus is particularly satisfying, giving the track some oomph as it plunged into a second verse that showcases Springer’s vocal delivery, oozing with wit and personality. The track builds to a electric final chorus and by that point, if you weren’t already a Paint Me In Colour fan, you certainly will be.

Whilst almost every band deserves to make it big, it’s an unfortunate fact that many won’t break out much further than maybe the next city over. Certainly, you can have an educated guess at how well a band is going to do, but there are no guarantees.

But sometimes a band just has something that makes you believe that, with a bit of luck and drive, they are going to go very, very far. It’s cliché, but that je ne sais quoi is real, and Paint Me In Colour have it. Not only do they have a strong collection of tracks, with ‘Pick Me Up’ being their catchiest to date, but they have a character, a spark, an energy, a something undefinable that just makes them feel like there are some big stages waiting for them to walk out on.

Until then, give this track a listen when it drops, and give a shout out to your long-suffering bar workers, baristas, and waiting staff whilst you’re at it.

You can listen to Paint Me In Colour’s new track ‘Pick Me Up’ on streaming services on 08/03/24. You can presave the track on Spotify here.
