SINGLE REVIEW: Vienna – Stare into the Sky

’…a brilliantly uplifting and spirited affair that will transport you to the finest summer holidays you’ve ever experienced…’

Ahead of their support slot for upcoming emo stars Michael Cera Palin, Midwest emo via West Midlands outfit Vienna returned earlier this month with their second single, ‘Stare into the Sky’. Produced by Jake Checkoway, known for his work with Origami Angel, this is an electrifying emo anthem that should easily find its way onto any playlist by fans of the genre.

Percussion skitters by in a blaze of danceable energy, wrapped up in layers of buoyant bass and intricate, jangly riffs. A simple but punchy bridge vaults the listener into a superb final chorus that switches up the rhythms and includes rousing brass, giving it a delightfully celebratory atmosphere. It’s a brilliantly uplifting and spirited affair that will transport you to the finest summer holidays you’ve ever experienced, despite the February gloom outside.

This is only elevated further by the deeply heartfelt melodies that are delivered by Ben Jones with a wistful optimism. The ‘let’s just waste our time’ hook in the chorus is an undeniably catchy moment, set against a driving instrumental that urges you to get up and dance like nobody is watching.

For too long have Midwest emo fans this side of the Atlantic been left wanting. Finally, with bands like danger dog and Vienna, things are looking up for the UK scene. ‘Stare into the Sky’ is a track that not only will appeal to hardcore fans of the genre, but is a wonderfully accessible point for newcomers, especially those who enjoy already pop punk and indie rock. A track that demands a place on whatever playlist you use this summer.
