SINGLE REVIEW: Girl Group – Lil’s Room

powerful synth bass lines, luscious harmonies, simplistic twanging acoustics, and gently thumping percussion all come together to produce something with almost an air of the mystical about it

Last year saw the release of Girl Group’s debut track, ‘Life is Dumb’. Based out of Merseyside, the five-piece pieced together a brilliant post-punk track that acted as a witty yet nuanced commentary on what it means to be young and female in the modern world, and with it’s deceptively simplistic yet remarkably catchy bass lines and melodies, spellbinding harmonies, and viciously acerbic lyricism, it easily found a place in my Top 50 Songs of 2023.

Now they’re back, with their all women team of creatives at their side, with what is a stunning evolution of their sound. ‘Lil’s Room’ is a sublime track, with layers and layers of wonderfully evocative sonic magic; powerful synth bass lines, luscious harmonies, simplistic twanging acoustics, and gently thumping percussion all come together to produce something with almost an air of the mystical about it.

It’s a fascinating listen from start to finish, documenting the importance of third spaces within our lives, the insidious grip that depression can have on your self-awareness, and the impact this has on the way we build the spaces around us. ‘Lil’s Room’ is packed with ‘candles, crystals’ and burning incense, and allusions are made to horoscopes and lunar cycles; it’s almost as if it’s some altar, a respite from melancholy that one must make a pilgrimage to. Conversely, it’s no such peaceful oasis to whom it belongs to, painted and decorated in tandem with weighty depression.

Moments of conversation and frivolity punctuate the track, almost as ghosts of the room itself, with faint clinking glasses and soft murmurs. It’s such a minute yet astounding level of detail to add within what is already a vibrant and densely packed sonic world; the room is as alive as anyone who inhabits it, touched and stained by the memories made within the four walls.

Girl Group could easily have made another post-punk track, and no doubt it probably would have been fantastic. But with ‘Lil’s Room’, the group swing towards a more lo-fi and bedroom pop style of orchestration, whilst still maintaining a certain degree of grandeur and sophistication. It’s a brilliantly intelligent track, and indicative of a band that has some wonderfully unique and creative ideas.

As their Spotify says, Girl Group are here to feed your dirty girl god complex, and frankly, I don’t think I could describe them better if I tried.
