Absolutely vicious.
Deshine are a band with attitude in every sense of the word. Based in Liverpool, the punk four-piece dropped their debut single in March of last year, and have been hard at work thrashing out live performances. It’s clear that they are here to bring back some straightforward punk grit to Liverpool’s music scene, so often dominated by indie and pop, and with this new track ‘Sally’, that mantra is clearly paying off.
Raw, fuzzy riffs crash into bass lines that deftly alternate between simple, punchy grooves, and subtle complexity. The energy is undeniable, the band utilising these simple elements to conjure up something that sounds truly massive; the percussion in particular maintains a steady backbone for the track, tossing in fills with flair whenever the track calls for it.
This is especially true during the searing instrumental segment in the back half of the track, ripping by with a ferociously compelling guitar solo wrapped up with screeching feedback and brilliantly playful bass lines.
All of this lays the foundations for a fantastic vocal performance. Everything is here is dripping with pure punk venom, the vocals a consistent, arrogant snarl that is so much fun to listen to, truly harkening back to an era in which attitude meant so much more in music. On top of that, catchy hooks and melodies aren’t ignored, sprinkled across the track to give something to truly hook you in, especially on the choruses.
Deshine feel like a band that could so easily blow up, possessing a certain feral energy that makes them genuinely beguiling to behold; ‘Sally’ is the epitome of this, begging to be shredded out in front of a ravenous audience in your favourite local basement music venue.
The band declare this to be ‘the best song in the [world]’. And frankly, their conviction might just have you agreeing.
