SINGLE REVIEW: Dead Poet Society – My Condition

a rambunctiously defiant track, one that is indicative of a band willing to broaden their horizons

Later this month will see the release of Dead Poet Society’s third album, ‘FISSION’. Last year saw one of the released singles, ‘I hope you hate me.’, make it into my Top 50 Songs, with its swaggering grooves and deadly infectious hooks being impossible to shake off. Now with this new single, it’s clear that ‘FISSION’ is shaping up to be the band’s finest album to date.

My Condition’ sees the band swing in a more pop-rock route compared to their usual blown-out indie sound. Those gritty, distorted indie rock riffs are still there, but on this track they collide with bright pop rhythms and culminate in a track that feels right at home with the rest of the DPS discography, yet manages to demonstrate a distinct evolution in the band’s sonic style.

However, it’s the lyricism here that truly shines, as vocalist Jack Underkofler grapples with existential dread, and fights to come out on top of it; nothing matters, so you may as well have fun. That sentiment particularly shines on bars such as ‘I came so close to giving in/But I want more/I hold my breath ’till my own death breaks down the door’ and ‘I’ll die alone like a forgotten saint/
[…]No one would care, I remember my name
’.

It’s a rambunctiously defiant track, one that is indicative of a band willing to broaden their horizons; mature and introspective, yet still with that scrappy attitude and playfulness that makes their earlier material so enjoyable.

Should the rest of ‘FISSION’ match up to the quality of the singles so far, then it could easily be a fantastic start to a big year for this exciting band.
