SINGLE REVIEW: Bring Me The Horizon – Kool-Aid

Oli Sykes bringing some of his heaviest vocal work in a long time to the party, all set to a backdrop of thunderous alternative metal fury

The roll out for Bring Me The Horizon’s latest project has been rocky, to say the very least. What originally was intended as 5 EPs in a year has morphed into one mini-album and one unreleased project, with a format yet to be determined, across the span of just over three years. On top of that, we recently saw the departure of keyboardist Jordan Fish, and the announcement that this upcoming project isn’t to be released until the Summer.

However, amidst all of the chaos, the band’s music continues to shine through. Last year we were spoiled with tracks such as ‘LosT’ and ‘AmEN!’, with the former finding it’s way onto my Top 50 Songs of 2023. This trend of keeping fans well-fed with great singles continues into 2024 with this return to heaviness in the form of ‘Kool-Aid’.

There is a distinctly emo core to this track, similar to recent releases like ‘LosT’ and ‘Die4U’, with its hugely catchy choruses that reel you in with simple but effective melodies and over dramatic, dark lyricism (‘Cause you got a taste now/Drank the Kool-Aid by the jug’). The dreamy electronic outro to the track, seemingly pulling from studio session recordings, is a nice touch.

Moments of ‘That’s The Spirit’ era BMTH punch through this poppier style, however, with Oli Sykes bringing some of his heaviest vocal work in a long time to the party, all set to a backdrop of thunderous alternative metal fury. All of it is brought to life by the finishing touches of Dai Dai of Paledusk, whose production manages to make the verses seem crushingly claustrophobic, whilst the choruses could fill stadiums.

It’s still a long way to go before we finally get to listen to ‘POST HUMAN: NeX GEn’, and we’ve yet to truly see what form the band will take following Fish’s departure. But if ‘Kool-Aid’ is anything to go off, then the band could be about to enter a whole new exciting and electrifying era.
