what is here is just so enjoyable and entertaining to listen to. Fauxtrot have a distinct style in their approach to progressive post-hardcore
Following on from their debut single ‘Retrace Embrace’, Philadelphia based progressive post-hardcore outfit Fauxtrot are back once more with their debut EP. ‘Lost In Translation’ is a delightful little project that has some real promise, and plenty of variety.
Certainly, for fans of progressive post-hardcore, there’s a lot to love here. Unconventional song structures, a real focus on groove, and plenty of noodling riffs, all of which culminate in a collection of tracks that are just plain fun to listen to.
’Retrace Embrace’ is a track I have reviewed previously; it’s a snappy, bouncing track that has some devilish little hooks that are guaranteed to stick with you. The vocal delivery is understated, yet incredibly distinctive, perfectly accompanying the mellower tone of the instrumentation here.
Further down the prog post-hardcore rabbit hole exists ‘Cheers to the Years’, which is a grittier track that has far more in terms of punchy riffs and emo undertones. The guitar work here is particularly impressive, with some superb phrases that sound almost a little jazz-fusion in their execution.
At the other end of the musical spectrum, however, is the gorgeous acoustic-led cut of ‘Follow You’, which strips things back both in terms of the instrumentation and experimentation, but in return delivers a performance that is packed with a great amount of character and charm.
Certainly, this EP feels like a debut project, a band testing what they are capable of, but what is here is just so enjoyable and entertaining to listen to. Fauxtrot have a distinct style in their approach to progressive post-hardcore that is hard to truly put down in words; the influences are clear, but the twists in these influences are welcomed. Definitely an EP worth grooving along to.
