SINGLE REVIEW: Sunflo’er – fifty ways to leave a housefire

a raw, claustrophobic mix that really only adds to the violent tension of the song; an ode to the inescapable 9-5 that exists in spite of our humanity

Last year, New York based mathcore outfit Sunflo’er launched one hell of sonic assault with their sophomore effort ‘all these darlings and now me’. Their blistering hardcore style was meshed wonderfully with some genuinely beautiful musicianship, such as on the phenomenal title track closer, and singled them out as one of the most exciting upcoming heavy acts.

Now, Sunflo’er are back once more with their rapturous new single ‘fifty ways to leave a housefire’, which acts as the lead single for an EP the band promise to release details on soon. Not only do the band continue to flesh out their monolithic sound, but this latest track showcases some of the band’s best lyricism to date.

Jeff Lyszczarz performs with a visceral, aggressive desperation, as they hopelessly attempt to reconcile the joy of finding meaning with the knowledge of existing with a system that leaves it unattainable. It’s a painfully relatable experience, as Lyszczarz presents the mundanity of day-to-day life as a smothering chokehold (‘The alarm clock echoes in a thoughtless mind 5 days a week, you can’t ignore it this time’).

Surrounding Lyszczarz performance is a hurricane of mathcore rage. Commencing with an apocalyptic wall of intricately weaving percussion and bass, the guitars join in across this track with both noodling harmonies and gritty, blown out riffs. It’s all pulled together with a raw, claustrophobic mix that really only adds to the violent tension of the song; an ode to the inescapable 9-5 that exists in spite of our humanity.

Certainly, it may be December next month, but musically the year is far from over. ‘fifty ways to leave a housefire’ may well be the first part of one final fantastic project in 2023. It’s hard not to feel like Sunflo’er are a band with something very special to give, and it may well be this upcoming EP.
