One half simple love song, one half scathing commentary on celebrity culture, as with everything the Degenerates do, the social observations are delivered with acerbic wit and a knowing wink
It’s been a long time coming, but finally we are entering the era of Gen and the Degenerates debut album.
The Merseyside rockers have been working hard at establishing themselves as not just a band with a lot of attitude and punch, but one of the finest live acts in the north west right now. Last year the band dropped their killer debut EP ‘Only Alive When In Motion’, packed with anthems such as the post-punk tear-down of gender roles with ‘Girl God Gun’, and the ferocious call-out of influential abusers on ‘Burn Your Pedestals’.
February 2024 will see the release of the band’s debut LP, ‘Anti-Fun Propaganda’, and to commence this era the band have dropped the blues rock banger ‘Famous’. One half simple love song, one half scathing commentary on celebrity culture, as with everything the Degenerates do, the social observations are delivered with acerbic wit and a knowing wink.
Punchy guitars punctuate a stomping percussive rhythm, all of which is brought together by a killer bass line that perfectly balanced swagger with melody; it’s immensely fun to listen to, calling you to the dance floor whilst maintaining a punkish grit. Everything is soaked in fuzzy distortion that contrasts the glamorous, celebrity obsessed lyricism with a delightful rawness.
Frontperson Genevieve Glynn-Rees is absolutely one of the finest live performers on the circuit right now, and none of their enigmatic power is lost in the studio. Not only are they simply a powerhouse of a vocalist, but ‘Famous’ once again shows their penchant for theatrical and captivating vocal deliveries, perfectly mediating the balance between obsessive lover and fame fanatic.
After years of toying with their sound and style, ‘Famous’ feels like the real mark of a band that truly understands who they want to be. Just remember that they’re not cool, they’re post-cool. Keep up with the trends, yeah?
