SINGLE REVIEW: Fallweather – Halesia

a band that understands the beauty that can be found in subtlety and quietness in between the rage

Originally a duo of vocalist Cullen Forbes and drummer Halley Simpson, five-piece melodic hardcore outfit Fallweather are one of the freshest new bands to arrive to us from the burgeoning Australian heavy scene.

Last week, the Melbourne based band dropped their debut single, ‘Halesia’, which acts as a precursor to their upcoming debut EP. The band list their influences as being the sounds of the 2000’s post hardcore scene, along with the heavier sounds of modern metal, and this debut track displays that perfectly.

Fierce screamed vocals are layered over spacious and atmospheric guitars and percussion that tangle with one another in delightfully punchy yet nuanced ways; gloomy melancholy complimented by a righteous defiance.

Fallweather – Halesia

Huge choruses with the simple ‘decay away’ hook add a real sense of immensity to the track, and the dissonant, almost sludgy breakdown in the back end of the track brings the song to a fantastic close, before it slowly slips away on quiet, haunting note.

Certainly, little gets the blood pumping like an aggressive beat down, but Fallweather are a band that understands the beauty that can be found in subtlety and quietness in between the rage. There’s a homage being paid to the post-hardcore legends here, but Fallweather are careful to ensure that this track still feels unique to them.

They might be down under, but the Australian heavy scene is forever on top.
