Fucking phenomenal.

That’s all I’d have to write to give you a succinct and honest review of this track. Frankly, I’d say you shouldn’t spend time reading this review when you could be listening to this track. But I’ll write it up anyway, just on the off chance you require further persuasion.

The Throwaway Scene. An enigmatic outfit that appeared out of the mist back in 2021 with their peculiar minimalist track ‘Contrived’, before gifting us the simply incredible single ‘Stay’ in 2022. Since then, it’s been a steady flow of absolutely incredible alternative rock that treads a fine line of emo and post-hardcore, all wrapped up in a vague and mysterious overarching concept.

Earlier this year we received the absolutely raucous single ‘Fake Death’, with its allusions to the Kübler-Ross model of grief and marked aesthetic changes for this era of the band. ‘Who Else Is In The Room’ follows up on this, heralding the band’s debut EP ‘On Death & Dying’ which arrives next year.

Themes of anger and isolation permeate this blistering emo anthem that truly begins to display just how special this outfit is. There’s a theatrical delivery to the whole affair, with a violent and vengeful undercurrent to the lyricism which is delivered with a ferocity and flamboyance that is indicative of a special kind of talent.

From the crackling vaudeville opening moments, to the fascinating subtle use of vocal effects, the track spirals with tense, confessional nature, as if between two co-conspirators. Furious percussion rages up against intricate yet ferocious riffs that drags the listener along, kicking and screaming, caught up in the moment of a track that feels rich with a gloomy immensity.

All of this builds to an incredible climax that is rapturous to behold, with the vastest and most ambitious scope of any The Throwaway Scene track to date. It’s clear that this isn’t a band just content with writing songs; this is a collection of musicians writing with the intent of producing art. It’s a lightning bolt of adrenaline rush to listen to, and the prospect of there being a full EP on the horizon makes it only even more thrilling to behold.
