SINGLE REVIEW: Mina My – I Miss Your Dog

a deeply charming and brilliantly catchy track that is so packed with character that you can’t help but fall in love with it

If I had a nickel for every Norwegian artist I’ve reviewed this week, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t many, but it’s a sign of the musical pedigree that Norway has.

Stavanger via Liverpool singer songwriter Mina My released her debut single earlier this month, giving us the perfect autumn indie anthem in the process. ‘I Miss Your Dog’ is a deeply charming and brilliantly catchy track that is so packed with character that you can’t help but fall in love with it.

Describing this track as simply indie would be doing it a disservice, however; from the jangly guitars in the verses that unravelling into fuzzy riffs in the choruses, to the catchy melodies delivered with a bittersweet humour, ‘I Miss Your Dog’ fits right in with the best jangle pop music you can find, and even has a subtle midwest emo vibe to the whole affair that will appeal to fans of artists such as saturdays at your place.

Mina My – I Miss Your Dog

Lyrically, Mina My does a fantastic job at capturing one of the lesser spoken pains of a break-up; all of the people and pets that get left behind in the wake of it all. The second verse in particular is a wonderful piece of songwriting, with Mina evidently at peace with whatever decisions an ex might make about her, but being unable to let go of another being she has grown to love in this relationship.

It’s accompanied by a gorgeous little pre-chorus that opens up into a brief moment of soft ambience, before crashing down into one final chorus that really hammers home that deeply infectious hook. It’s a track that is quite simply begging to be played in a live environment.

My only complaint? I’m going to spending the rest of my day singing this song now. Mina My evidently possesses some great skill at songwriting, and it’s easy to imagine her becoming an indie cult favourite. Give this track a spin, and pour one out for all the good dogs in the world.
