crackling with raucous garage rock energy that intermingles with the slick sensibilities of blues rock and the pure catchiness of alternative rock to conjure up something infectious yet just a little rebellious
The latest act rising out of the burgeoning new wave of Liverpool musicians comes in the form of four-piece modern rock outfit, Centerfold. The band dropped their debut track ‘Rewrite Your Time’ at the end of last month.
At the crossroads of bands such as Royal Blood and Greta Van Fleet, ‘Rewrite Your Time’ is a track crackling with raucous garage rock energy that intermingles with the slick sensibilities of blues rock and the pure catchiness of alternative rock to conjure up something infectious yet just a little rebellious.
Ciaran Gaffney produces a stellar performance throughout. Fantastic, jagged main guitar riff that rips through the verses before smoothing out into a huge, bluesy explosion of swaggering confidence. This gets capped out with a searing solo towards the back end of the track that is packed with ferocity and technical flair.
It’s not just all about those riffs here though; Josh Stevenson provides some powerful vocal acrobatics, with an upper register that shines in those utterly monstrous belted chorus melodies. It’s a startlingly defiant performance in the face of the tracks themes of facing up to judgement and insecurity.
Jamie Munns keeps things rocking with a punchy percussive performance that culminates in a fantastic flurry of fills that caps out Gaffney’s guitar solo, whilst beneath it all there is a slick, melodic groove grounding the band from bassist Jerry Buxade. It’s a genuinely impressive performance from all involved in this track, especially for a debut track, and it’s all brought to life by a notably crisp yet raw production that keeps everything feel alive and in motion.
‘Rewrite Your Time’ is, simply put, a great debut effort from Centerfold, one that clearly demonstrates their influences and how they tie them together under the banner of their own creativity. There is plenty of room in the UK’s scene for a band that can hit you with huge choruses and heavy riffs, yet have you dancing at the same time, and with this track, that’s exactly what you get.
Let’s see if Centerfold are ready to take that space all for themselves.
